Electric vehicles offer a fundamentally different driving experience compared to traditional internal combustion engines (ICE), most notably in their sound, or lack of. The fully electric Genesis GV60 Magma, which premiered last November, has been designed to deliver its driving experience through a blend of advanced engineering, refined luxury and driver-focused technologies. Donggyu Kim, a research engineer in the Genesis total vehicle evaluation team, explained, “We developed various specialized features and exclusive technologies to deliver a deeper, more unique high-performance experience to drivers of the GV60 Magma.”
GT and Sprint modes
Accessible via a dedicated button on the left side of the steering wheel, the two Magma-exclusive drive modes, GT (Grand Touring) and Sprint, enable the driver to instantly tailor the vehicle’s setup to desired driving characteristics.
GT Mode calibrates the acceleration response for smooth, relaxed dynamics ideal for high-speed, long-distance cruising, yet powerful performance remains instantly accessible if the driver depresses the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor. All-wheel-drive control and front-rear power distribution are also optimized to enhance efficiency and driving range.
Sprint Mode adjusts all electronically controlled components, such as steering, suspension, motor and electronic limited slip differential (e-LSD), to their most aggressive, sporty settings. Traction is maximized by adjusting front-rear power distribution and e-LSD control.
A key distinction of the GV60 Magma’s drive modes is the ability to interpret driver intent and automatically integrate various performance functions.
Virtual gear shift and realistic sound
The GV60 Magma also features an advanced Virtual Gear Shift (VGS) system that mimics the sensation of shifting gears in a high-performance ICE vehicle. By combining realistic engine sounds with the feel of a V6 paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), it recreates the traditional driving experience.
The function adjusts shift patterns, feel and sound for each drive mode. An RPM Fuel Cut feature further enhances the simulation during manual paddle shifts by mimicking the way an ICE temporarily stops fuel injection at a specific RPM.
E-active sound design plus
Complementing the VGS is the e-Active Sound Design Plus (e-ASD+), an enhanced virtual sound technology that simulates engine sounds through two external speakers at the front and rear of the GV60 Magma to deliver a richer auditory experience that aligns with the expectations for a high-performance vehicle.
Drivers can select from two exclusive soundscapes. The first is a powerful, futuristic EV sound inspired by the audio revealed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The second is a new sound designed specifically for the VGS function, realistically replicating the powerful acoustics of a high-revving engine redlining at 9,000rpm.
