GM has described a vision of a custom-built in-vehicle AI assistant that uses vehicle-specific data to provide precise answers about a car’s systems and components. The assistant would support drivers by anticipating needs and offering contextual information, with an expected rollout later this year.
Inspired by its vision, GM plans to integrate Google Gemini into its vehicles, introducing an AI assistant experience at scale. Gemini is expected to roll out soon to 2022 model year and newer Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC vehicles with Google built in. Around four million vehicles in the US are eligible for the update.
“Gemini delivers AI assistance to millions of drivers across every segment and price point for a wide range of everyday needs” said Tim Twerdahl, global vice president of product management, General Motors. “That kind of scale is only possible because of the connected vehicle foundation GM has built through OnStar over the past 30 years. Later this year, GM will deliver a more deeply integrated AI experience shaped by OnStar intelligence.”
Gemini is available through Google built into GM’s infotainment system, using the vehicle’s software platform and OnStar connectivity to provide more detailed and contextual information. It replaces the current Google Assistant with a more advanced AI assistant designed to offer more natural and intuitive interactions, with ongoing improvements over time.
With Gemini, drivers can use natural voice interaction without needing specific commands or repeated context. It can be used to request music based on mood, route or trip duration, discuss surroundings such as landmarks, explore general questions or ideas, and translate and send messages in different languages, all while supporting hands-free, eyes-on-the-road use.
