Scout Motors unveils Community UX audio design featuring engine recordings and acoustic guitars

US truck manufacturer Scout Motors has developed bespoke audio notes for its upcoming Traveler and Terra models that focus on sound as part of the in-vehicle user experience. The company says its Community UX treats audio not only as functional feedback but also as a design element influencing driver interaction and perception.

The system includes more than 70 individual sounds, covering alerts, confirmations and interaction cues, that have been developed to balance usability and brand identity, with an emphasis on clarity and consistency across different driving scenarios.

“Scout Community UX is about creating harmony between the physical and digital with a sound you don’t just hear, you feel and remember,” said Chris Benjamin, chief design officer, Scout Motors. “It’s about creating space for connection; with the people in your life, and with your surroundings. A sound story that is truly Scout.”

The sound design was developed using a combination of recorded mechanical noises, environmental audio and studio-produced elements. Engineers captured sounds from a vintage Scout vehicle, including switchgear and engine noise, to reflect the brand’s heritage. Additional recordings were taken from rural environments and acoustic instruments to shape a broader sound profile.

“The sounds in our new vehicles have been thoughtfully crafted, from the intricate recordings of a vintage Scout vehicle in an anechoic chamber to the handcrafted acoustic guitar sessions in a Nashville studio, all to invent our vehicle’s voice for the very first time,” said Andre Nitze-Nelson, Scout Motors director, UX Design. “This process ensures a memorable Community UX where distinct sounds prioritize safety, utility and pure joy, all while sharing a unique ‘Scout sound family’ DNA that will elevate the driving adventure.”

The audio system is structured around different use cases. Safety-related alerts are designed to be clear and unobtrusive, while frequently used signals focus on functionality and recognition. Less frequent sounds are used to reinforce brand identity without becoming intrusive.

Scout Motors said the sounds were finalized using professional studio mastering rather than standard digital workflows, to ensure consistency across playback systems.
