Gentex displays latest automotive technologies at CES 2023

A range of camera-based driver assistance solutions from Gentex were displayed at the CES 2023 show in Las Vegas, Nevada, with the company using a vehicle demonstrator to showcase driver and in-cabin monitoring solutions, as well as its Full Display Mirror and an accompanying sensing system.

The demonstrator enables visitors to see what the driver and in-cabin monitoring solution’s mirror and overhead-integrated camera see, and helps them understand the system’s decision-making processes. The driver monitoring system works by monitoring a driver’s head pose, eye gaze and several other parameters to ascertain whether the driver is distracted, drowsy or has become ill while behind the steering wheel of a vehicle. The system is also capable of returning manual control in semi-autonomous vehicles.

Gentex’s system can be expanded to include 2D and 3D cabin monitoring for the detection of passengers, behavior, objects and also to detect the presence of life. Furthermore, machine olfaction sensors deliver a digital sense of smell for detecting airborne chemicals and particulates which may enter the cabin.

“Our goal is to provide comprehensive cabin monitoring solutions, from core driver monitoring through complete cabin monitoring and machine olfaction,” said Neil Boehm, vice president of engineering and chief technology officer, Gentex. “We want to provide solutions for today’s vehicles as well as transitionary and autonomous vehicles, and that means engineering a comprehensive and scalable monitoring platform based on unique sensor fusion techniques.”

Also, on display is the company’s Full Display Mirror (FDM), an intelligent rear-vision solution that utilizes a custom camera and mirror-integrated video display to improve a vehicle’s rearward view. Video from the rear-facing camera is then streamed to a mirror-integrated LCD to provide an unobstructed, panoramic rear view of what is behind the vehicle.

Extra features can be added to the mirror, including a mirror-integrated digital video recorder, scalable trailer cam system, touchscreen display, lane-line projection overlays and a mirror-integrated selfie camera.
