Volta Trucks and Nexyad partner for data-driven advanced driver assistance system

A new partnership between Volta Trucks and Nexyad will see a next-generation driver coaching and scoring system integrated into the Volta Zero electric commercial truck to ensure drivers navigate to their destinations safely when traveling through urban environments.

The solution will use Nexyad’s embedded, real-time data platform which groups onboard data and uses hybrid physics-informed artificial intelligence to aggregate various data sources from vehicles in real time before interpreting them. This simplified information is then provided to drivers of Volta Trucks vehicles to foster the development of safe driving styles to reduce risk for themselves and other road users.

Nexyad’s platform draws on vehicle information and driving conditions to deliver a maximum sensible speed recommendation which considers the speed limit, the road surface and topography, weather and traffic. By using real-time information to suggest a maximum prudent speed, the system goes beyond the European Intelligent Speed Assist requirement. The system also features Nexyad’s safety coach, SafetyNex, which acts as a virtual co-pilot in the cabin to provide drivers with anticipation guidance if required, helping to avoid emergency situations.

The real-world information is then used to give drivers a safety score which reflects their driving style. This is then used to promote safer driving styles. Fleet managers can track and monitor their driver’s performance with more accuracy, and insurance companies can assess risk levels and offer bespoke premiums for each driver based on their risk profile.

Nexyad’s safety coach and driving score system will be running in Volta Trucks’ prototype vehicles for the next few months and is available for customer trials. All of the collected data is available for the company operating the truck to view.

“Safety is at the heart of Volta Trucks and our ambition is to produce the safest trucks possible for the urban environment,” said Casper Norden, chief fleet solutions officer, Volta Trucks. “The Volta Zero has been engineered from the ground up with both the driver and vulnerable urban road user safety at its core. The innovative system from Nexyad, incorporated into the Volta Zero, provides drivers and fleet operators with next-level information, helping to promote safer driving and making cities safer for all users.”

Gerard Yahiaoui, chief executive officer of Nexyad, said, “Nexyad is very proud to integrate its artificial intelligence-based Safety Coach into the innovative all-electric Volta Zero. Our AI technology SafetyNex brings prudent recommended speed to the dashboard of a truck and will help avoid accidents, particularly in dense city areas where Volta Trucks’ offer makes a lot of sense for delivery. Avoiding accidents is our mission, We Save Lives.”
