General Motors set to expand Super Cruise hands-free driving system

The hands-free Super Cruise advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) from General Motors – which enables drivers to sit back and let the vehicle carry out a journey autonomously – is expanding. During the research and development stage, GM conducted a focused testing and validation program to ensure the ADAS technologies are fit for purpose.

The Super Cruise road network consists of mapped highways where customers can engage the hands-free driving system, and in August 2022 the OEM announced it would double the road network to over 644,000km in the USA and Canada. Certain models of full-size sports utility vehicles under the Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC brands built on or after October 3, 2022, with Super Cruise will receive the expansion before being delivered to customers in November 2022.

Existing Super Cruise vehicles built on GM’s VIP electrical architecture will have the road network expanded via over-the-air updates in the coming months.

By the end of 2023, GM aims to have Super Cruise available for 22 vehicles globally. Ultra Cruise will become available on selected premium models at a later date.
