Polyurethane foam has traditionally been used to reduce noise, vibration and harshness in vehicles, contributing to passenger comfort. Autoneum‘s polyester felt-based sound insulation system is lightweight, resilient and shapeable.
Flexi-Light PET is manufactured from a blend of polyester fibers primarily sourced from recycled PET. During the production process, the company is able to adjust the fibers’ orientation to produce a proprietary felt with mechanical and acoustic properties comparable to that of polyurethane foam. The material is flexible and can be molded into 3D shapes, making it suitable as an insulation material for interior components with complex contours, such as carpets and inner dashes.
Composed entirely of PET and containing up to 90% recycled content, Flexi-Light PET can be used as a decoupler in conjunction with other PET-based technologies within the product portfolio to promote full circularity. The technology builds on Autoneum’s Flexi-Loft technology, which is made from a blend of recycled cotton and polyester fibers and was first introduced in 2021.
In related news, Autoneum has developed the N-Join1, a monomaterial carpet system made from recycled materials that eliminates the need for latex and adhesives, offering an eco-friendly solution for vehicle interiors.
