Vibracoustic Stator Isolator reduces torque ripple produced by e-motors

To improve the noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels of e-mobility platforms and powertrains, Vibracoustic has developed a solution to reduce the torque ripple caused by the fluctuating magnetic fields of e-motors in battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

The company’s multifunctional Stator Isolator achieves this by preventing the transmission of axial, radial and torsional vibrations from the stator into its housing.

In traditional BEVs, torque ripples are transmitted from the e-motor to the gearbox, eventually reaching the vehicle’s body through the motor mounts. Ripples are also transmitted through the side shaft and into the wheel, creating an array of NVH-related issues, including airborne noises within the cabin.

Vibracoustic’s Stator Isolator works by isolating the stator from the stator/e-motor housing, providing axial, radial and torsional isolation. Designed for integration with e-motor cooling devices, the cross-functional product also acts as an effective seal for circulating oil. Drawing on the company’s expertise and development of rubber compounds, the Stator Isolator is capable of withstanding long-term exposure to high-temperature oil while maintaining tight tolerances.

Designed to be adapted to the existing stator carrier, the product benefits from unique form-fit geometries which prevent rotation and provide an effective and durable seal. To date, prototypes of the solution have been designed and developed for customer development projects.

Initially intended for premium segment vehicles where NVH management is more important, the company has plans to integrate similar Stator Isolator solutions in other vehicle applications using e-motors.

“We proactively invest in the research and development of innovative new solutions to support established and emerging OEMs,” commented Dr Jörg Böcking, CTO, Vibracoustic. “The Stator Isolator is an effective and forward-thinking product that demonstrates our whole-vehicle approach to NVH management and our commitment to easily integrated solutions that deliver tangible, real-world benefits.”
