Ceres Holographics integrates multiple HUDs in single windshield

Ceres Holographics integrates multiple HUDs in single windshield

Ceres Holographics, which provides transparent displays for augmented reality applications, has unveiled what it says is the world’s first in-plane heads-up display (HUD) that integrates multiple transparent displays onto a single windshield, achieving the industry’s largest field of view.

Each HUD is customized for the intended viewer. Each separate display areas measures up to 400mm by 300mm and contains a specifically programmed holographic optical element (HOE).

By using holography and precise manipulation of light, the system can ensure that information is visible only to the designated user, for greater safety and comfort while driving.

The solution, which was demonstrated at the Driving Vision News Interior Workshop in Cologne on April 23-24 , can be replicated in volume using Ceres’s HoloFlekt manufacturing machinery. The final product, coupled with compact projection units, delivers a full-color, wide field-of-view transparent display HUD.

By enabling up to three display systems in a single sheet of film, the solution has been designed to provide essential operational information to the driver without distraction on one display, while also offering important safety alerts and situational information on another, and using a third as a connected screen for passengers.

Ceres Holographics says the solution can cater to specific vehicle geometries and windshield curvatures, as well as the defining projector specifications.

“This is a major milestone – demonstrating that we can extend our transparent display HUD solution across the windshield to save time, money and provide a wider variety of UX options for drivers and passengers,” said Andy Travers, CEO of Ceres Holographics.

“With our HoloFlekt technology, OEMs can transform any windshield into an ultra-bright, full color and compact multi-display HUD, where safety, operational, navigation and infotainment content can all be shown in a clear and non-distractive manner regardless of external light conditions. Because of the off-axis viewing angles required, the only way to achieve this is with holography.”

The multi-HOE solution is available for implementation in proof of concept (PoC) projects with select OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers.
