General Motors selects Qt to support software-defined vehicle development

Under a newly signed supplier agreement, the Qt Group will equip General Motors with its cross-platform human-machine interface (HMI) development tools and framework to enable the OEM to ‘design and develop once, and test and deploy everywhere, across different brands and configurations’.

Qt’s software development portfolio – consisting of Qt Design Studio and Qt Development tools and framework and the Qt Quality Assurance tools – aims to improve efficiency, providing developers with more time to create value-adding features, in addition to bringing products to market more quickly.

Through the agreement, GM will have access to Qt’s fully customizable cross-platform design capabilities, bridge tooling, performance-optimized real-time 2D and 3D graphics and reusable code. The OEM aims to transform the in-vehicle user experience and connect customers’ digital lives, providing vehicle occupants with an enhanced in-cabin experience that can be modified and updated while limiting the need to purchase new or additional hardware.

GM’s software-defined vehicle strategy will see the OEM launch its Ultifi software platform in 2023, enabling over-the-air software updates and additional benefits. Working alongside GM to contribute to future versions of Ultifi, Qt will help the OEM provide the service at scale with flexibility and efficiency across an array of brands and products.

“This collaboration strengthens Qt’s position as a market leader in advanced UX design and development,” said Juha Varelius, CEO of Qt Group. “GM’s plans for its vehicles aim to redefine the future of the automotive industry. Software-defined vehicles will mark a turning point in the experiences that auto manufacturers are able to offer their customers.”
