Hammond Transport becomes one of the first UK adopters of the MAN OptiView mirror-replacement system

A new MAN 26.510 TGX 6×2 tractor featuring the advanced OptiView mirror-replacement system has been supplied to Hammond Transport, which has become one of the first hauliers to use the system in the UK.

OptiView replaces all conventional mirror arms and mirrors with five exterior cameras, two on either side of the tractor, mounted above the door frames close to the leading edge of the A-pillars, and a fifth camera which replaces the forward facing Cyclops mirror.

The smart safety solution delivers close-range, wide-angle and blind spot displays to increase the field of vision to provide the driver with a much better overview of the surrounding traffic and pedestrian situations. This is vital when performing maneuvers such as turning or lane changes.

All of the exterior cameras are splash and waterproof, self-cleaning and heated automatically, to ensure the sharpest of images are transmitted to the vehicle’s internal displays in all weather conditions.

Installed inside of the truck on the A-pillars are digital display screens, consisting of a 12in display on the driver’s side and 15in on the co-driver’s side. Each display screens HD live feed data from around the truck at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

To improve the driver’s view, the display brightness and contrast can be adjusted for each display individually, either automatically or manually, using the door control module. The OptiView system automatically filters out disruptions in the camera footage, and enhances image clarity for a glare-free view of the traffic behind and to the sides. The system can also reduce glare from other vehicles’ lights when operating in the dark.

“MAN trucks are a popular choice with our drivers and with the introduction of the OptiView system the vehicles now look sleeker and offer a more comprehensive view of the vehicle’s surroundings, which as we do a considerable amount of work in London, is ideal for us,” said Terry Hammond, managing director, Hammond Transport. “We’re really excited to be one of the first adopters of OptiView in the UK and the support we’ve had from MAN, in terms of system familiarization and driver training, further cements our view of MAN’s genuine committed and caring support.”

The tractor also features a GX Cab with an ergonomically designed, leather, adjustable multifunction steering wheel, an HD 12.3in color display with satellite navigation, MAN’s SmartSelect truck-optimized infotainment control and Bluetooth. Furthermore, an under bunk fridge, a 110mm cold foam comfort mattress, a 24V 4kW auxiliary heater and a roof-mounted cab cooler improve comfort for the driver.
